LEARNING OUTCOME #3
describe and provide examples of how modern human form and behaviour is shaped by local biology and culture
Technology
- Technology allows for many different lifestyles
- Use of technology to modify any external environmental constraint or pressure
- Technology allows human culture to rely less on extinct, cultural behaviours
- It allows for more reliance on things that fewer and fewer people have expertise in
Lecture 2
Food
- Certain foods that we consume are done for cultural reasons, but this food can also affect our biology
- Particular cultures practice specific diets that may cause people to grow and develop differently than others
Lecture 1
Body Standards
- Many cultures have an ideal look for women such as petit features (i.e. waist, feet)
- They manipulate the body to look this way, and by doing so it isn't always healthy for the body
- For example, foot binding was done in Chinese cultures because women having small feet was an ideal cultural standard. In doing so, they bind the foot extremely tightly in material to alter the shape, as well as the size.
Lecture 1
Adaptations
Process by which organisms adjust to their environment and increase their chance of survival and reproductive success
1. Behavioural Adaptations
- For example, when someone is getting hot, they know to move away from the sun or heat source, or remove clothing.
2. Physiological Adaptations
- For example, your body responds to the heat by sweating
3. Genetic/Developmental Adaptations
- For example, when someone is in a hot environment for the duration of their life they tend to be taller than those who grow in cold conditions are shorter
